Moving In The Winter

Tips for Moving In The Winter

Moving in the winter can be a challenge, you have to deal with unpredictable weather and cold temperatures. It’s helpful to make sure you’re prepared for whatever might happen. Moving in the winter is sometimes necessary and can’t be avoided. But that’s fine and I’m here to help with some tips to help the day go a little more smoothly.

Confirm All Details

It’s always best to make sure all details are confirmed with your moving company ahead of time. Because you might run into unexpected weather changes or there might be a lot of snow where you are. You might need extra time with your moving company. But the one nice thing about moving during the off season is that you’ll have lots of dates to choose from. However, it’s a good idea to keep your eye on the weather.

Keep Checking the Weather

In Canada we know that the winter can sometimes be difficult and unpredictable. That doesn’t have to stop you from moving. Watch for the weather and if it changes, call your movers and make sure they are aware. Check the weather conditions everyday the week leading up to your move. Things will be ok, we’re Canadians and we’re tough when it comes to the winter weather.

Protect Your Floors

Of course winter means wet boots and shoes and you don’t want to have people damaging your floors. A great way to protect them is to have floor mats at every entrance and to purchase some cheap plastic tarps and cover any floors you want to protect. It can get wet and you don’t want to have a mess, it might also be a good idea to have some towels on hand as well.

Packing Fragile Items and Electronics

When it’s cold outside it can be possibly damaging to fragile items and to electronics. When you leave electronics in a cold truck over night or in a car it will freeze. Once that item is brought back inside it will thaw and can cause water damage. To avoid that I recommend that you keep your electronics close and somewhere warm.

Same goes for an fragile items, since the cold makes them more fragile, they’re more likely to break. Keep that in mind when you’re packing and be aware of what you’re putting in the moving truck. That also goes for any extra warm clothing, you don’t want that to end of packed in a moving truck. Stay warm and dress for the weather.

Tip The Movers Well

We know how hard the movers work and how much harder they often have to work during the winter months. Dealing with mire difficult driving conditions and possible snow and ice to navigate through. Therefore it might be good to be a little extra generous when tipping. Show the movers how grateful you are for their hard work.
